More than 80 alumni and friends enjoyed an epic night at Madison Square Garden in March to watch two alumni face off in an NBA match-up between the New York Knicks and Atlanta Hawks. “The energy was electric,” says Akinyi Sagoe-Moses ’11, who described a scene with Sidwell fans of all ages decked out in School colors to cheer on former Quaker basketball stars Josh Hart ’13 of the Knicks and Saddiq Bey ’18 of the Hawks.
“It was a thrilling experience,” says Akinyi, who had the idea to hold a regional club event at the game. “The Garden was packed and the game was close, which kept the crowd on the edge of their seats. It was a perfect blend of excitement, camaraderie, and school spirit.” The evening was truly a Sidwell Friends experience with several attendees opting to enjoy a Beyond Josh Hart Burrito, created by alumnus and Beyond Meat Founder and CEO Ethan Brown ’89 (2024 Sidwell Friends Distinguished Alumni Award recipient).
“Regional clubs are a fantastic way to reconnect with old classmates and meet alumni from different generations,” says Akinyi, who joined the NYC club last year. Currently, there are clubs in Boston, Los Angeles, New York City, San Francisco, Seattle, and Washington DC. Each one hosts two annual signature events: Winter with Friends and Summer with Friends. Members also gather to celebrate the achievements of fellow alumni.
“I’ve made friendships with people of all ages, connected with others in my field, and even made a few new friends,” says Akinyi. “Joining a regional club is a great opportunity to expand your network, share experiences, and feel connected to the Sidwell Friends community.”
